Book Buzz

Book Buzz readers will meet on Thursday, April 22 to discuss Kevin Boyle's 2004 prize-winning book The Arc of Justice. A professor of history at Northwestern University, Dr. Boyle will be talking about his book during an evening ZOOM presentation sponsored by the WCE on Thursday, April 29, and the Book Buzz group decided at their March meeting to read the book in preparation for Dr. Boyle's conversation the following week. The book won the 2004 National Book Award for Non-fiction and tells the electrifying story of a sensational murder trial that divided Detroit and ignited the civil rights struggle. In 1925, Ossian Sweet, a Black doctor and grandson of a slave, purchased a house in a previously all-white neighborhood. Shortly after his arrival, an armed and angry white mob gathered outside his house and Sweet, or one of his defenders, accidentally shot and killed one of the attackers. The ensuing trial brought the legendary attorney Clarence Darrow into the fray and transformed Sweet into a controversial symbol of racial justice and equality. The evening's discussion leader will be Elizabeth Kinney. Please note that this is a change of plans from the originally scheduled discussion of My Antonia at the April meeting. The discussion of My Antonia has been moved to May.
