Book Buzz

About this event

On Thursday, February 19, Book Buzz members will gather at the Clubhouse to discuss EMMA. Written by nineteenth century writer Jane Austen, the book is the story about a wealthy, clever and willful young woman Emma Woodhouse who believes she is a master matchmaker. Her matchmaking efforts for her friend Harriet Smith end in disaster, but Emma is not put off by her failure and continues to meddle in the lives of many others. The book provides a sharp, subtle and incisive critique of Regency England society, a period typically defined as being from 1797-1837 and the time in which Austen lived. Like all of Austen’s other novels, a central theme of Emma is the exploration of social hierarchy, property inheritance, and the crucial role of a good marriage in securing a woman's financial security and social standing. Considered by many to be Austen’s finest of her six published novels, Emma is a blend of wit, irony, and realism. The evening’s discussion will be led by Mary Watt.
