On Thursday, October 26, Book Buzz members will meet to discuss Braiding Sweet Grass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teaching of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer. First published in 2015, sales of the book had a slow start but took off when word of mouth by enthusiastic readers pushed it up onto the top 10 list of The New York Times. Kimmerer is a botanist and professor of plant ecology who has spent her career learning how to ask questions of nature using the tools of science. She is also a member of the Potawatomi tribe who learned from elders, family and history that plants and animals should be considered to be our oldest teachers. Her book is a collection of essays that Kimmerer describes as being “an invitation into reciprocity. In return for the spectacular gifts of Earth, say to yourself: What am I going to do about that? What is my accountability for everything I have been given?” The evening’s discussion will be led by Barbara Bridges.

Then on Thursday, November 16, Book Buzz members will gather for a conversation about The Daughters of Yalta by Catherine Grace Katz. Much has been written about the historic Yalta Conference in February 1945 when Churchill, Stalin and Roosevelt met to decide the future of the postwar world. However, little is known about the role played behind the scenes by three young women . This book tells the story through the eyes of Sarah Churchill, Anna Roosevelt and Kathleen Harriman, the daughter of W. Averell Harriman, the U.S. ambassador to the Soviet Union. Skillfully written and meticulously researched, it is an extraordinary book that reveals the human side underlying the politics. The Daughters of Yalta is a remarkable story of fathers and daughters whose relationships were tested and strengthened by the history they witnessed and the future they crafted together. The evening’s discussion will be led by Nancy Nimz. The meeting will be held off-site at Creative Co-working, 922 Davis Street in Evanston.
