Monday, August 16 7:00-9:00 pm: Organize backpack donations

The Community Outreach Committee is excited to be working with two local organizations to help kids be ready for their return to school this fall.

ESCCA (Evanston‘s School Children Association) provides school clothing for all Evanston/Skokie District 65 K-8th grade school children in need. New this year we are helping to provide new clothing items in specific sizes that the organization has a hard time fulfilling through its typical donations.

As we did last year, we will be providing backpacks, school supplies, and hygiene kits for children through C24/7 Father‘s Arms Ministries in Rogers Park. The WCE is supplying the backpacks, but we need members to help fill them with supplies.

Come join other book lovers on ZOOM for a discussion of presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin's best-selling book Leadership: In Turbulent Times. In this culmination of five decades of acclaimed studies in presidential history, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author offers an illuminating exploration of the early development, growth, and exercise of leadership.

Are leaders born or made? Where does ambition come from? How does adversity affect the growth of leadership? Does the leader make the times or do the times make the leader? In Leadership, Goodwin draws upon the four presidents she has studied most closely—Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Lyndon B. Johnson (in civil rights)—to show how they recognized leadership qualities within themselves and were recognized as leaders by others. The evening's leader will be Tamara McKnight.
